How to Select Nunchaku for Beginning Martial Art Training

How to Learn Basic Nunchaku

Certain martial arts such Eskrima, Taekwondo and Karate traditionally incorporated nunchaku training, but it was reserved for black belts. Over time, however, nunchaku became recognized as a sport in its own right. Nunchaku focuses on the use of nunchaku, commonly known as nunchucks. The advantage of using nunchucks is that they have a long reach, and you can learn specialized moves only possible with this weapon.

Things You’ll Need:

  • Set of practice nunchaku

  • Comfortable clothing

  • Large space with a soft floor

  1. Train with practice nunchaku to get a feel for the size of the weapon, and the rhythm of strikes and blocks. Although it may not be as exciting as starting with an authentic weapon, you avoid hurting yourself or a sparring partner by using soft, foam-covered nunchaku. It’s also important to begin training in a wide-open space, away from potentially breakable items or walls that you could dent.

  2. Practice learning the proper stance when holding your nunchaku. Although this doesn’t sound exciting, martial arts requires proper form to successfully perform moves. Balance and control of your body and the weapon are your best allies.

  3. Learn basic strikes including forward, sideways, upward and downward, and keep practicing until you can perform them in quick succession. You can obtain this information by watching videos online, or by reading an illustrated book depicting basic moves.

  4. Find a partner with which to practice blocking. Your partner should also understand the basics of nunchaku or have martial arts training. By learning how to block multiple weapons and strikes, you will be able to defend yourself and someday participate in sparring matches or tournaments.

  5. Purchase a set of set of wooden or metal nunchaku, once you’ve mastered the practice set. Expect a learning curve as you transition from a practice weapon to the genuine article, because the weight will differ. Start by mastering the basic moves again, but this time with your authentic nunchaku then progress into more advanced moves.

Tips:

  • Always consult a physician prior to starting a new exercise routine, to avoid injury.

  • If you have a difficult time mastering basic nunchaku moves on your own, consider enrolling in a course and learning from a professional martial arts instructor.
