How to Learn English ESL Online

The Internet makes learning languages easy. To learn ESL online, look for programs with certified teachers who instruct students online using video conferencing tools, email and web-based resources. Learning English online requires dedication, but the process can be fun and rewarding.

  1. Identify your main reasons for learning ESL online. If it's to prepare for a trip to an English speaking area, a conversational course may be more appropriate. Professional and academic goals will require programs with greater structure that involve reading, writing, listening and speaking.

  2. Contact colleges and university extension programs. These programs may have online ESL courses. The advantage of formal programs is that you are guaranteed instruction by highly qualified teachers who are skilled in supporting students through the process of learning a new language. Not everyone who speaks English can necessarily teach it. Breaking down language to various components is a distinct skill.

  3. Sign up with a language learning school. Such schools are independent programs that hire certified teachers. Their classes may be offered online for groups or individuals. Advantages generally include scheduling flexibility and a wide choice of instructors. The downside may be cost, although affordable schools may be found.

  4. Hire an ESL teacher who teaches online. Look for ads placed by ESL teachers who instruct students on a one-on-one basis online. They usually charge by the hour.

  5. Look for free ESL videos and lesson plans. Some teachers post free resources online that teach grammar, writing mechanics and pronunciation. Free lessons in written form also are available online.
