How to Learn Forensic Science at Home

Forensic Scientists are like puzzle solvers of the crime world. Without them, crime labs would have nobody to process their evidence and help solve their cases. They are very experienced in biology, chemistry and math. Most all of these classes can be taken at home without ever stepping into a classroom.

  1. Sign up for online courses. You want to make sure that the college that you apply for is accredited with the national board. Some colleges that offer an online degree in forensic science are University of Florida, University of Massachusetts, and Kaplan College.

  2. Sign up for advanced math, biology and chemistry classes. These are the courses that you will want to take to get into forensic science. Pick a field based on the classes available to you. Some possible courses of study include forensic toxicology, serology, or environmental forensics.

  3. Pass all your classes with good grades. The higher the grades you have, the more desirable you are going to look to future employers. Once you have graduated with your certificate or degree, start applying for positions at crime labs, police departments and morgues. If you can get an internship, the better off you will be. This will give you hands on experience in the field. From there, in most cases, the place that you intern at will hire you onto their team if they like your work ethic and you do a satisfactory job.

  4. Once you are given a job, apply for any licenses or certifications that you may need to be an official forensic scientist in your state.
