How to Learn the Culinary Arts

Some people are born with the natural talent of cooking and throwing different spices together to create something that satisfies the taste buds. Fortunately, there are options available to those who aren't natural born chefs, or who want to improve their skills. There are different levels of education offered in the Culinary Arts that teach students how to become excellent in the kitchen.

Certificate

Earning a certificate in the Culinary Arts is for people who want hands on training as soon as possible without committing to a long term education. These programs typically last anywhere from one month to two years depending on the chosen pace and how much you want to learn. Culinary certificates are offered at community colleges, vocational schools and Culinary Institute.

Associate’s Degree

An associate’s degree may be completed in as little as nine months to two years and is ideal for those who also want hands on training as soon as possible, but want more of an in-depth learning experience. This degree can be earned from a community college or the Culinary Institute. Anyone interested in getting an associate’s degree in Culinary Arts will first need a high school diploma.

Bachelor’s Degree

Getting a bachelor’s degree in Culinary Arts takes four years of education and training, but offers students who finish the opportunity to become managers and restaurant owners. A bachelor’s degree must be completed at a university and requires a high school diploma or GED before admittance.

Master’s Degree

Students seeking to become managers, restaurant owners, culinary instructors and nutritionists or dieticians are required to have completed a master’s degree from a university and will already have a bachelor’s degree before beginning the master’s program. Students wanting to complete their master’s degree in Culinary Arts will be looking at another two years of study.

If improving cooking skills is for personal purposes only, you can easily sign up to take a cooking class that covers some of the basics. Many vocational schools offer these classes and are open to the public. People are only required to go through a Culinary Arts educational program if that is the type of career they are interested in pursuing.
