How to Light a Propane Furnace
Propane furnaces are commonly used to heat homes that do not have access to natural gas. Proper cleaning and maintenance is a necessary part of owning a propane furnace. Lighting a propane furnace can be dangerous if it is not done properly. Keeping the furnace clean will help make the lighting process much safer and easier.
- Turn the thermostat within the home all the way up to ensure that the supply of propane to the furnace is on.
- Locate the pilot valve on the propane furnace.
- Turn the pilot valve from the "Off" position to the "Pilot" position. This usually requires that you push down on the valve while turning for safety.
- Wait for 5 minutes for any remaining propane gas trapped within the furnace to clear out.
- Remove the panel covering the pilot light within the furnace. Locate the pilot within; it is usually found near the gas burner assembly.
- Light a long stemmed match and place it directly next to the pilot within the furnace.
- Push down on the pilot valve, you should hear a clicking sound indicating that gas is being dispelled from the pilot.
- Wait 30 seconds and then release the button to see if the pilot light remains lit. If the pilot light stays lit, then the furnace is lit and the process is compete. If the pilot light goes out you will need to repeat steps 6-8.
- Replace the panel onto the front of the furnace securely.
- Adjust the thermostat to the desired heat setting needed to maintain the desired temperature within the house.
