How to Line Envelopes

Planning a wedding or special occasion is exciting. You find various creative ways to announce the event, decorate the venue and thank your guest for attending. Expressing your vision is simple, from the date to the lining of the invitation envelope.

The overall mission of any invitation is to communicate the events meaning from the sender’s perspective. Style of an envelope and handwritten address on the front sent the required message. Lining an envelope with decorative paper or an engagement photo gives an extra punch the meaning. The process to line envelopes is simple.

Tools and Materials Needed

  • Decorative Paper

  • X-Acto knife and scissors

  • Glue stick

  • Bone folder

  • Scrap paper

  • Envelopes

  • Pencil

  • Ruler

Instructions

  1. Lay the envelope with the flap open onto a sheet of cardboard. Trace the shape of the envelope and flap with a pencil.

  2. Measure the gum line and mark it off on the cardboard with the pencil.

  3. Use a X-Acto knife and ruler, to trim the sides slightly narrower and the marked off gum line. Check the fit of the cardboard template against the envelope. Cut excess off. You can use this as a liner envelope template to cut two or more sheet of decorative paper simultaneously.

  4. Place the template on the decorative paper and cut around it with a X-Acto knife. Use a ruler for straighter lines.

  5. Slide the liner into the envelope; try to get the liner to extend to the bottom for a secure placement. Check for any miss alignment before folding the corners down below the glue line. Use a bone folder to create a sharper crease.

  6. Take the paper out of the envelope, and cut any corners along the folds with scissors.

  7. Place the liner sheet into the envelope and fold down the flap. Now, lift the envelope flap, not the liner, keep that folded. Slide the piece of scrap paper under the liner flap to protect the envelope from glue. Run the glue stick over the edges of the back of the liner.

  8. Slide the scrap paper out. Close down the liner over the envelope flap. Place the side of the bone folder at the fold of the liner, slowly with pressure move toward the flap tip and do this twice to adhere the glue to the paper.
