How to Live With a Mental Disability
Unfortunately, people with mental disabilities often feel like they will never have a normal existence. However, mentally disabled individuals can take back their life by having a strong support system in place, simplifying their daily routine and never giving up hope.
- Seek the help of friends and relatives. Rely on the people closest to you for support and advice, especially during difficult times.
- Continue therapy. If you have received therapy from a counselor, psychologist or psychiatrist in the past, consider extending your therapy sessions. While many think of therapy for mental disabilities as a short-term solution, long-term therapy can be beneficial for maintaining a positive state of mind.
- Take your medications regularly. Some people with disabilities stop taking their medications because they feel better, failing to recognize that the medication has contributed to the perceived cure. Ensure all prescribed medications are taken everyday at the appropriate dosage.
- Join a support group. Find a support group for people with your mental disability by talking with your doctor or researching groups on the Internet. This will give you a chance to meet people who can relate and sympathize with your situation.
- Simplify your life. Clean and organize your home, removing clutter, paper piles and unused items. Create a daily schedule so that you can focus on necessary tasks.
- Find enjoyment. Start a new hobby, or volunteer for a charitable cause. If you enjoy animals, consider adopting a pet. Know that having a mental disability does not mean you cannot live a happy and fulfilling life.
