How to Look Up Old Newspaper Articles

Old newspapers can be a great resource for research papers, school papers, and genealogy research as well as weddings, obituaries and local historical events. Depending on what you are looking for, you can find old articles in the newspaper in several ways.

  • Friends and Family: Grandma and Grandpa are surely likely to have a basement full of old newspapers that may have exactly what you are looking for. This is a good place to check out first since you know it won't cost you anything.

  • Library: The library is a good resource to find most anything. They have a system called Microfiche that you can look up most any paper material on. There are archives of local, national and foreign news. Depending on how long the library keeps records for in the building, you may have to have an appointment to see what you are looking for so that the microfiche files can be retrieved.

  • News Editor: The news editor of the newspaper is more than likely going to know where he can gain access to the archives of the article you are looking for. This person would be an excellent resource to help you find any further articles you may look for.

  • Internet: The Internet has most everything on it so why would it also not have your article? Doing a quick Google search will probably yield you better and quicker results than finding your article elsewhere. Make sure that you find the information you are looking for from a credible resource.
