How to Look for Old Barn Lumber

Weathered barn lumber is great for craft projects. Picture frames and folksy signs and wall plaques are all excellent examples of the items which can be made with this recycled wood. However, finding seasoned barn lumber can be a challenge, unless you know where to look. There are some things to consider when you need to purchase your next supply of old barn lumber.

  • If you live in or near a rural area, drive around the countryside and keep an eye out for any farmers who might be tearing down a wooden barn. Recycled pieces can often be taken for no or very little cost or simply the removal of the pieces from the property. This is especially true if the area has suffered any recent wind or storm damage.

  • Conduct a search on Google to see if any websites are selling any old reclaimed barn lumber or siding. There are several websites that specialize in selling these types of pieces.

  • Check the local classifieds in both your local newspaper and online for anyone who may want to have a barn removed from their property.

  • Craiglist.org offers a local search option, along with a building material and free category. Try searching to see if someone has listed any old reclaimed barn materials in either of these categories.

  • Visit a crafters tradeshow. Vendors at these events often sell items, such as pieces of reclaimed old barn wood, for craft projects.

  • Contact any contractors in the area, which do barn repair or replacement. They sometimes sell pieces of old barn wood that has been salvaged.

The important thing is to remain vigilant in your search when looking for old barn wood. It is available. It just may take some searching to find it.
