How to Mail a Federal Tax Return
To avoid paying penalties and possibly even interest to the IRS, you need to know how to mail a federal tax return. It is not a difficult process, but it is important that you do it correctly and mail the tax return to the appropriate address.
You Will Need:
- Completed tax return
- Business size envelope
- Stamps
- Complete your annual tax return. Some people feel comfortable doing this themselves, while others prefer to have the assistance of a tax professional. If you are using tax software to prepare your tax return, be sure to print out all of the forms and schedules. Double check that you have entered all information correctly and signed the return.
- Place the tax return into a business-sized security envelope. Enclose a check made out to the IRS if you are enclosing a tax payment.
- Look up the correct address to mail your return to on the IRS website. This address will depend on your location and whether or not you are enclosing a payment with your tax return.
- Address the envelope to the location you looked up in the previous step. Put your return address in the upper left corner. Make sure to apply the proper postage to the envelope.
- Mail your tax return early to be sure that it arrives at the IRS facility in plenty of time. You may think that this advice does not apply to you because you plan to file your tax return electronically, but you never know when a power outage or internet problem can arise.
