How to Maintain Aluminum Window Awnings
Aluminum awnings are placed over windows and doors to provide shade. Aluminum awnings are durable and weatherproof. To keep aluminum awnings beautiful for years to come, monthly maintenance is required. Maintenance includes cleaning away dirt and inspecting for any discoloration.
- Wait for the awning to cool. The awning should be cool to the touch before maintenance begins. Spraying cold water on a hot awning can cause warping.
- Spray water over the awning. Using a hose, rinse any dirt and debris from the awning.
- Mix a bucket of warm water with a tablespoon of car wash soap. Wipe the solution over the awning using a soft sponge. Use a brush with nylon bristles to clean hard to reach areas.
- Do not use abrasive cleaning supplies such as baking soda or steel wool. Baking soda can discolor an aluminum awning and may cause scratches.
- Rinse the solution from the awning. After the soap solution has been rinsed, inspect the awning for any remaining dirt.
- Use a soft cloth dabbed in mineral spirits to remove any stubborn stains. Mineral spirits can be found in hardware stores in the paint section. Paint thinner also works to remove stubborn stains on aluminum awnings, but the smell may be overwhelming.
- Do a final rinse. Use cool water for the final rinse. Remove any remaining suds and mineral spirits.
- Check the awning for discoloration. If the awning is beginning to discolor, mix 2 tablespoons of white vinegar in a bucket of warm water. Sponge the vinegar solution over the awning to restore color. Rinse the solution and repeat if necessary.
