How to Maintain Dog and Cat Shelters

If you have a love for animals and also have some experience working with them, you may enjoy operating a dog and cat shelter. If you would like to operate and maintain a dog and cat shelter, there are some things you will need to know first.

  • Always keep the shelter clean. It is important that you clean the shelter on a daily basis because if you do not, it will become a breeding zone for diseases and a health hazard to the animals.

  • Make sure that the floors of your shelter are made of concrete material. Using this type of material for the flooring is essential because it can be cleaned easily and it can also be disinfected regularly.

  • Provide plenty of drainage areas in your shelter. Because you will be cleaning the shelter on a daily basis, you will need drainage to handle all of the water that will be used.

  • Protect the animals in your shelter. You should have a fire alarm and fire sprinklers in your shelter. If a fire were to occur, having this type of equipment could save the lives of your dogs and cats. It does not hurt to be cautious.

  • Make sure that each animal has its own kennel or cage area. You should supply food, water, toys and blankets for each animal everyday.

  • Always inspect the animals. If one animal becomes sick or has a certain disease, it is important that it be treated; if not treated, the disease will only get worse and may possibly spread to other animals in the shelter.

  • Keep detailed records of each animal that enters your shelter. Keep all of your records organized in a locked filing cabinet.
