How to Make Baby Jackets
Children seem to grow right before your eyes sometimes. One day their clothes fit and the next day, not so much. Outerwear is a definite must-have. A great way to show off your creative side and save a little money is to build your child's wardrobe; why not start with making a cool fall jacket. If layered properly, it can be worn well into the winter months.
Designing baby jackets is not as difficult as some would believe. The key to making any type of garment lies in utilizing the selection of your pattern. This is how the jacket is designed. There are several steps involved but if you have the time to dedicate to this project, you will find that the final outcome is well worth it.
- Measure your child. Take care to measure the entire body and the height.
- Find a pattern that is classic and not too trendy. Remember, as your child grows, this garment can be passed on to other siblings or relatives.
- Decide on a fabric type. Heavy-duty cotton or a polyester-cotton blend will work well for jackets, especially when considering the cleaning benefits. Most types of wool require dry cleaning.
- Put the material on top of the pattern and follow the direction with scissors using pins to secure any loose areas. Cut all of the fabric to size according to the enclosed directions.
- Consult your instructions after all of the pieces have been cut. Begin assembly. Add the pockets, sew seams and sleeves.
- Attach the collar and any additional accessory pieces such as the collar facing and stitch right and left-side facing.
- Complete final alterations on the sleeves and bottom of the jacket and add button holes.
- Place the buttons on the opposite side of the button holes and verify alignment.
