How to Make Bed Skirts
Describe different bed skirts with three criteria the box skirt, the gathered skirt and the pleated skirt. Each are elegant and lovely designs which cover mattresses while leaving a bedroom or day room with a finished crisp linen. The bed skirts require medium skill level in sewing, the pleated bed skirt skill level is more advanced with pinning and basting the pleats.
- Select the fabric for the outside of the mattress, which covers the space between the mattress and the floor. Any elegant fabric, a linen, cotton or silk with a color and theme directed to the room you are matching, since this will be showing at the edge of the bed or daybed. You will also need a plain sheet or inexpensive cotton the size of your mattress plus seam allowances. On average, for the standard bed skirt, 4 yards of 52 inch fabric, plus one sheet of the bed size is sufficient with extra for drapes or pillows. Plan to double the fabric amount for the gathered or pleated skirt
- Assemble the cut pieces from the elegant fabric, after you have cut the elegant pieces sized to the furniture with additional amount for the skirt hem. You will have four pieces of elegant fabric that will be sewn together, to cover the portion of the bed from the mattress edge to the floor. Pinning and pre-hemming the skirt will help to insure an even hem when you complete the skirt.
- Sew the elegant fabric sides together using a French seam, including a dart or rounding at the top for the mattress edge will assist with the fitting of the skirt. Assemble the cotton sheet with the skirt, by sewing the skirt to the sheet. Fit the skirt to the bed front, there will be some sheet remaining, after sewing you can cut and sheer the leftover area. This will be tucked under the mattress. Your skirt complete ready for final hemming and placing on the bed.
- Undertake the advanced projects after completing a few regular bed skirts. Conceive the boarders pleated or gathered then the gathers or pleats are sewn in, usually with a seam binding tape, reducing the strain from the bed furnishings because of pull and use. Finally, sew your sheet to the bed skirts.
