How to Make Children's Name Plaques
If you have been trying to think of a way to decorate your child's room without spending a lot of money you should consider making some name plaques. The plaques can be scattered around the room. Most kids will love them because it gives them a sense of ownership.
Making children's name plaques is something you can easily do by following a few simple instructions.
- Purchase some inexpensive unfinished wall plaques from your local arts and crafts store. You should be able to purchase them for a couple of bucks.
- Use a piece of medium-grit sandpaper to sand the plaque, and then change to fine-grit sandpaper. Continue to sand the plaque until the surface is smooth.
- Use a soft cloth to wipe off the sand dust.
- Paint the plaque with an acrylic paint in the color of your choice.
- Allow the paint to completely dry and then add another coat.
- Use a pencil to draw a horizontal line through the center of the plaque. Make the line as light as possible.
- Use a stencil to put the child's name on the plaque. This should be done by lining up the letters on the stencil on the line. You may want to use a ruler to make sure the letters are properly centered on the line.
- Dip a stencil brush in the paint color of your choice and fill in the letters on the stencil. Do not over saturate the brush because you do not want the paint to bleed underneath the stencil.
- Remove the stencil and allow the letters to completely dry.
- Use a paintbrush and apply two coats of matte sealer on the plaque allowing drying time between each coat.
- Cut a piece of ribbon to use as a hanger. If it is for a boy's room you may want to use a piece of rope.
- Apply a dab of hot glue to each end of the ribbon and stick the ends to the back of the plaque.
