How to Make Custom Waterproof Footwear
Those who like to enjoy the outdoors know that one way to ruin that experience is to get your feet wet while camping, hiking or climbing. The problems that are caused be wet feet are too many to mention. It is not that hard to waterproof your footwear and can be done inexpensively as well.
- Buy a water repellent spray at your local drug or grocery store. The most well known brand is called ScotchGuard. It is a good idea to read the instructions making certain that your shoe material is listed for use in the instructions.
- Use a drop cloth or old towels to cover the area you will be applying the waterproofing on. It would also be a good idea to do this where there is adequate ventilation so you do not breathe in the fumes.
- Make absolutely sure that your shoes are completely cleaned of all grime, grease and dirt prior to spraying them with the waterproofing.
- Follow the directions on the label of the waterproofing material and evenly apply it to the shoes, one at a time. It is best to hold the shoes high enough to make sure you cover all surfaces while applying the waterproofing material. Protect your arm and hand while doing so.
- Set both of the shoes where they will be allowed to completely dry. This will most likely be at least a period of 24 hours or longer. Do not allow any moisture to be on or around the shoes for this time. Once the drying period has passed your footwear will be waterproof.
