How to Make Decorations for Cakes
Cake decorating is a fun and rewarding pastime for serious and novice bakers alike. You don’t need to be a master baker to create lovely decorations for your cakes and other baked creations. The right tools and a little know how will have your cakes well-dressed in no time.
Items Needed:
- Medium consistency royal icing in desired color flower color
- Medium consistency royal icing in desired center bead color
- 2 cake decorating piping bags with coupler tips
- Drop flower decorating tip such as number 129
- Number 2D decorating tip
- Waxed paper
- Air tight container
- Fill your piping bag with your medium consistency frosting and attach your coupler and a number 129 decorating tip. This tip is specifically designed for making a drop flower decoration, one of the simplest and loveliest cake icing decorations to create.
- Work your frosting inside your piping bag so that it is well within the neck of the bag. Use your hands to press out any undesirable air bubbles. Air bubbles inside your frosting bag can disrupt the flow of your icing and ruin a flower while it is still in progress.
- Fold the end of your piping bag over and give it a twist. This will keep your frosting within the neck of the bag and prevent any bubbles from forming. Keeping a twist at the end of your bag also applies a steady pressure on the frosting, ensuring that it leaves the bag at a steady rate as you squeeze.
- Hold your bag so that your tip is vertically straight up and down in relation to the surface of your wax paper.
- With your tip just slightly above the surface of the waxed paper, slowly pipe out a small amount of icing as you twist your wrist.
- When you reach a full rotation and are happy with your result, stop turning, release the squeezing pressure on the bag, and lift your tip away from your newly created flower petals.
- Set down your petal color and pick up the piping bag containing the contrasting color you will use for the center of your flowers.
- Attach your number 2D tip onto the bag via the coupler, twist the bag as mentioned above and pipe a small bead into the center of your flower petals.
- Repeat this process until you reach the desired number of flowers.
- Allow flowers to dry completely before use.
- Store unused flowers in an air tight container.
