How to Make ESL Lesson Plans

Lesson plans are tools used to help teachers of ESL prepare for class and ensure that students are meeting all of the necessary requirements.  A lesson plan should include details on the lesson being presented and what students should have accomplished by the end of the lesson.

Items Needed

  • Lesson plan

  • Workbooks

  • Worksheets

Lesson Plans

  1. Determine what your goals are for the lesson, including what you plan to teach the students, and what you hope for them to take from the lesson.

  2. Write down the objective of the lesson plan, which will include the object of the lesson plan and what students will have accomplished by the end of the lesson.

  3. Decide on a list of key words, new vocabulary words and phrases that will be used during the lesson.

  4. Write down a list of all of the necessary materials that you will need in order to complete the lesson plan, which will help you determine what you need before class.  Materials may include workbooks, worksheets, flashcards and pictures.

  5. List any methods you will be using to introduce new words and phrases to the students, including video presentations, flashcards or learning through repetition.

  6. List any activities that students will be doing, including learning games, writing exercises, group discussions, group performances or other projects.

  7. Write down your plan for how you will assess the students at the end of the class.  Assessing the students will help you determine if the learning objective has been met.  You may wish to ask the students questions, have them take a written test or complete a project to show the skills they have learned.
