How to Make Edible Cake Decorations

Cakes are great for any party or special occasion.  They can be plain with only some powdered sugar on top or they can be elaborate creations that are designed to inspire and amuse your guests.  These elaborate designs are garnished with edible decorations that you can easily make yourself.

Things That You Will Need

  • Rice paper

  • Edible markers

  • Piping gel

  • Edible glitter

  • A pair of short, sharp scissors

  1. Decide upon the design for your cake.  Make sure that this is something that you can easily draw.

  2. Search the Internet for pictures of the items that you wish to draw.

  3. Print out the photos that you find on regular paper.

  4. Place your rice paper over top of the picture that you have chosen.  Make sure that the image can be clearly seen.

  5. Trace the design with edible markers.

  6. Allow the design to dry overnight so that you are sure that the images have adhered themselves to the paper.

  7. Brush clear piping gel over both sides of the images.  This will make the colors brighter.

  8. Allow the gel to dry until the paper becomes tacky but has not fully dried (between 12 to 36 hour).

  9. Sprinkle some edible glitter over the top of the material so that it will stand out.

  10. Use a pair of short, sharp scissors to cut the image out of the paper.

  11. Place your decorations on top of the cake.  Adhere them in place with a few drops of water or some fondant.  They can also be stored in a zip-lock bag for up to a month.
