How to Make Essential Cinnamon Oil
Cinnamon has been used in aromatherapy since ancient times. This delicate spice is believed to have numerous healing powers and is a natural remedy for many ailments. It is commonly used to treat hypertension, anxiety and high blood sugar levels. Making essential cinnamon oils at home is a simple way to keep this alternative therapy on hand.
What You'll Need:
- 10 cinnamon sticks
- Olive oil
- Pot
- Strainer
- Funnel
- Glass bowl
- Dark colored glass jar with lid
- Place all of the cinnamon sticks and two cups of olive oil into the pot. Set the pot on the stove and turn it on medium heat. After about five minutes, the cinnamon will begin to simmer. You should easily smell the aroma throughout the air.
- Turn off the stove, and remove the pot from the heat. Leaving the cinnamon on the heating element for longer than five minutes will cause the oils to become scorched. Allow the pot to cool down before handling the oil.
- Pour the cooled oil into the glass bowl. Use a strainer to filter out any debris that came off of the cinnamon bark. A very fine strainer is ideal, as it will more effectively remove any residue from the cinnamon oil.
- Place the funnel inside of the dark colored glass jar. A clear glass jar may be substituted, but a dark one will give the cinnamon essential oil a longer shelf live. Light can damage the quality of essential oils. Carefully transfer the oil from the bowl to the jar. Gently tap the sides of the funnel to ensure that all of the oil drips into the jar. Tightly secure the lid of the jar, and wipe down the sides.
- Find a cool, dark place to store the essential cinnamon oil. A pantry is a great storage location. It is wise to label the oil with the name and the date. This way you will be able to easily identify it in the cabinet. Your essential oil should stay fresh for six months.
