How to Make Formal Dresses

Formal dresses can be worn to a variety of events and functions. They are often worn to weddings, school dances and work banquets. Many shops and stores sell formal dresses, but they are often expensive. You can make your own formal dress for a fraction of the cost.

  1. Decide if you would like to make your own formal design from scratch or if you would like to begin with a formal dress pattern. If choosing a formal dress pattern be sure to choose one in your size and be sure to follow the step by step instructions that are provided. It is much easier to use a store bought pattern than to create your own, especially if you are a beginner. If you would like to use your own design use the following steps.

  2. Sketch out your design on paper if you have decided to create your own formal dress.

  3. Know your measurements. If you do not know your measurements have someone help you measure yourself.

  4. Get a dress form. You will need this to sew together your dress.

  5. Determine the type of skirt you would like for your formal dress.

  6. Use any flexible fabric material, such as T-shirt, and your measurements, to create the waist, bust, and skirt on your dress form. Be sure to cut out straps, waistband, and circle for the skirt.

  7. Buy the fabric you would like to make your dress out of.

  8. Use the cut outs from your t-shirt material to cut out the pieces of your dress out of the fabric of your choosing.

  9. Sew all of the pieces of your dress together and enjoy your new formal dress.
