How to Make Frozen Fish Food

Fish food is available at pet stores and at many department stores. If you have a rare species of fish or prefer to feed your fish fresh food, you may want to make it yourself. You can use fresh ingredients such as insects or seafood and ice cube trays to create healthy and tasty food for fish.

  1. Familiarize yourself with your fish's diet. Make sure the food you plan to make is OK for them to eat. Most fish eat some type of insect or other seafood.

  2. Purchase the ingredients. If using insects, purchase them from your local bait store or fishing supply store. Night crawlers and other fish will need to be chopped up into small pieces. You can do this by hand with a knife or in a blender or food processor.

  3. Purchase ice cube trays that can make small ice cubes. These can be purchased from your local department store or kitchen supply store.

  4. Use a spoon to place the chopped fish food into the ice cube trays. Fill the ice cube trays three-fourths of the way full. Add water to fill them up completely and to help freeze the fish food into a solid mass.

  5. Place the ice cube trays into the freezer and allow them to freeze overnight. You can leave the ice cube trays in the freezer until you are ready to feed them to the fish, or you can remove them, place them in individual bags and stack them in your freezer.

  6. Pop out the fish food cubes when you are ready to feed the fish by dropping them into the aquarium.
