How to Make Garden Walls

The visual appeal of a garden wall enhances the overall look of the area. Besides the appeal it adds to your landscape, the wall keeps out unwanted pests. If you place a sitting area in your garden, the wall even gives you privacy.

Supply List

  • Stone or brick

  • Gravel

  • Shovel

  • Tape measure

  • Level

  1. Choose the material you want to use to build your outdoor partition. Some examples include flagstone or brick.

  2. Call your municipal authority to find out any specifications or regulations you have for constructing in your area. Some height requirements or building material regulations might be implemented in your area.

  3. Decide on a length and height. You should measure the area you want to place a stone wall around, so you have an accurate figure for how much material you need.

  4. Purchase the necessary materials for your landscaping project. Speak to a professional to figure out exactly how much material you need. You should pick up some extra supplies just in case you crack a brick or have a mishap with the flagstone.

  5. Dig out the area you want to place your garden and wall. Dig an additional foot on all sides of the area you dig out. This acts as a trench for a layer of stone and a layer of gravel to secure your wall.

  6. Place a stone or brick in a straight line around the border of your garden.

  7. Set the second layer on top of the first, making sure the brick or stone touches two bricks or stones on the bottom. Continue this pattern until you reach the desired height.

  8. Use a level to check sporadically to see if you wall is straight.
