How to Make High-Top Moccasins
Moccasins are very popular within the Native American heritages. Moccasins were created to protect the feet during the cold winter months. Most of them are leather custom-made footwear and are very easy to make at home by just going through a few easy steps.
Items Needed:
- Paper
- Pencil
- Leather material
- Ruler
- Sewing Machine or Needle andThread
Instructions:
- Customize moccasins by placing the feet apart and outline the feet by tracing around them using a pen or pencil. Be very precise so that in the end the shoe fit will be accurate. Mark a straight line down the middle of the feet with a pen and make a mark in the center beside the big toe.
- Mark the measurements using a pen on each side of the feet from the ball of the foot to the center line. Draw another mark with the pen that is ½ inches down and across from that point to mark the top of the slipper of the shoe. Make a curve around the outside of the toes with the pen that is ½ inches away from the feet.
- Create a ¼ inch mark with the pen from the bottom of the heel between the balls of the feet and the end of the toe. Draw a straight line to the same level as the bottom mark with the pen. Attach the marks to the end of the toe and draw a horizontal line between the marks under the heel.
- Rectangles are then added to the outside mark to the outside ball of the foot to the bottom. The rectangle is 2 inches wide. The center line remains together while the outside edges are cut with scissors.
- Put the pattern on the leather and use scissors to cut twice in order to have enough for both shoes. Each leather piece is folded down the center with wrong sides together. Stitch pieces together from center to bottom.
- Stitch together front of shoe with a running stitch with needle and thread or sewing machine. Make a whip stitch which is at the toe and the running stitch is above it. Stop at the top of the rectangle and turn the shoe inside out.
- Bend the top of the moccasin down or leave it up. Strips of leather can be cut with scissors and used to tie around the ankles for decoration.
