How to Make Homemade Gift Tags

Making homemade gift tags puts a unique personalized touch to your gifts. There are different options on how to make these tags. You can use computer templates for a last minute gift tag. Create your own tags using stencils or simple shapes that are decorated. Tags can be custom themed for young children. Pinking shears and wrapping paper can make a nice coordinated tag. Be creative and recycle old cards or other items.

  1. Decide whether to go with a theme or not. If there will be multiple gifts such as for birthdays or Christmas, it may be a good idea to use separate colored or shaped tags for the recipients. This works very well for young children.

  2. Determine whether to make your own gift tags by using stencils or tracing designs. These supplies can be found in arts and crafts supply places. If this is last minute, you can trace a simple shape and decorate it.

  3. Consider using templates from a computer program. There are a variety of sites and places that offer this option. Some programs will let you design your own customized tags. Just print out and label them. You can purchase paper with a sticky backing.

  4. Punch out holes using a hole puncher to insert string for your tags. You can make this really fancy by using different colored ribbons.

  5. Make your gift tags out of the wrapping paper that you used. This is a simple way to save on gift tags. Use pinking shears to give a nice edged look. You can cut out different shapes also. To make the tags stand out, use a color coordinated different piece of wrapping paper. It looks nice to have gift tags that match the bows.

  6. Let younger children make their own gift tags. This is a fun family project and puts a personalized touch to the gift.

  7. Recycle pretty paper or cards. Cut out old birthday or Christmas cards to encourage recycling. There will often be pretty embellished designs on them.
