How to Make Homemade Mother's Day Gifts

Mother's Day is a special time for moms and their kids. Children of all ages want to tell their mom she's special, and every mom loves something her child made. Making a creative gift that mom will always treasure is easy and fun to do.

  1. Make a wheel of affection. Use four sheets of card stock in various colors. Trace the outline of a small plate on one and cut it out. Cut circles from the remaining cardstock, making each one a little larger. You can use pinking shears or other fancy scissors for decorative edges. Glue the two larger pieces to each another and the two smaller pieces to each another. Mark the center point on both circles. On the smaller circle, cut a window measuring two-inches-long-by-half-inch-tall to the right of the center. Write something above the window along the lines of "You are" or "In my eyes, you are the." On the larger circle, write or cut from magazines, short phrases or words that express sentiments you want to convey. For example, "amazing" or "the greatest." It's important for the phrase to fit in the window opening. Put the phrases around the circle from the center point so that they are evenly spaced. Attach the two circles to each other at the center point using a paper fastener. The top wheel spins over the bottom. Decorate as desired.

  2. Create a mosaic flowerpot. Use a basic terra cotta clay flowerpot. Collect any desired elements to decorate. Suggestions include broken pottery or ceramics, glass tiles, smooth river pebbles, crystals, buttons, old jewelry, mementos, etc. Make sure whatever decorative elements you choose are clean. Apply a thick layer of ceramic tile grout to the pot under the lip. Use a knife or spatula for spreading and quick clean-up. Press your decorative elements into the wet grout. Use additional grout to cover any sharp edges, if applicable. Let the grout dry thoroughly and then wipe down with a damp cloth to remove any grout film or residue.
