How to Make Horse Sheets

If you own several horses then you know how expensive it is to take care of them. They need to be fed, bathed and kept warm in the colder months. One way that you can cut down on costs is by making your own horse sheets for your horses.

  1. Measure your horse. Use a fabric tape measure and start at the middle of the horse's chest and go along the side of its body until you reach the tail. An assistant would be helpful with this process to hold the tape in place in order to get an accurate measurement. The number that you come up with is going to be the length of the sheet.

  2. Sew your fabric. Lay two pieces of fabric on top of each other and pin them together. Next, sew the pieces together. If this was done properly, then you should have extra fabric on the outer side of the blanket as well as the glossy side. That way the sheet will lay flat against the horse's back without causing chafing.

  3. Select a horse sheet pattern. Adjust the pattern to fit the correct length of your horse by cutting off any extra inches. In some cases, you may need to add length.

  4. Add the pattern to the fabric. Use pins to attach the pattern to the fabric and cut off any excess.

  5. Put the sheet on the horse. Try the sheet on the horse to see if any adjustments need to be made.

  6. Finish sewing the sheet. If you are doing an open-front blanket then you need to sew buckles on the sheet. Otherwise, you can just sew the front closed.
