How to Make Ice Skate Pom Poms

Colorful pom poms are adorable accessories for personalizing ice skates. They are also easy and fun to make. In a few minutes you can turn some yarn into a colorful pom pom. In fact, because they are so easy to make, you can make many different pom poms, and change them out to fit your moods and match your outfits.

Materials

  • Yarn

  • A 4 inch wide piece of sturdy cardboard

  • Scissors

Procedure

  1. Cut a 10 to 12 inch piece of yarn and set it aside. This will hold your pom pom together and attach it to your skate.

  2. Wind the yarn from your ball or skein around the cardboard until it is fluffy enough for the look you want. A good rule of thumb is to wind it about 100-200 times. Make a note of how many times you wind it, so you can make a matching pom pom for the other skate.

  3. Slide the wound yarn off the card, and tie the 10-12 inch string around the center of the yarn pile. Double knot it and leave the ends free.

  4. Cut through the loops on either side of the pom pom with your scissors.

  5. Fluff the yarn with your fingers, and trim the around the ball with your scissors to get the fluffy look that you want.

  6. Attach the pom pom to your skate using the loose strands you left when you tied it together.

  7. Repeat steps 1-6 to make a matching pom pom for your other skate.

Tips

  • Choose a yarn that is sturdy and can stand to get wet. Make sure that you choose one with colorfast dye.

  • If you are having trouble removing the yarn from the cardboard, try using the four fingers of your non-dominant hand instead. Some people find this method easier.
