How to Use Castile Soap

How to Make Liquid Castile Soap

Castile soap is a great natural product which can be used for many things, such as washing skin, hair, laundry, countertops and floors. Since it doesn’t possess any harsh chemicals, it is a great alternative to those with sensitivities and can be easily made at home.

What You Will Need:

  • Bucket

  • Large stock pot

  • 1 cup of granulated lye, loosely packed

  • 4 cups olive oil

  • 24 cups water

  • Stirring stick

  • Gloves

  • Eye Protection

  • Food thermometer

  1. Fill your bucket with the 24 cups of water.

  2. Wearing your gloves and eye protection, dissolve one cup of granulated lye. Make sure not to over pack your cup of lye; it needs to be loose.

  3. Heat olive oil in stock pot on top of the stove until it reaches 75 degrees. For exact results, use a food thermometer.

  4. Remove pan from heat when oil reaches correct temperature. The heat may continue to rise after the pot is no longer heating. Do not proceed until it reaches a consistent 75 degrees.

  5. Add dissolved lye to the olive oil and stir with large stirring stick for 20 minutes. Make sure that you consistently stir while the lye mixture is cooling, so the mix doesn’t separate.

  6. Castile soap will be finished after it has properly cooled, about 20 minutes.

Warning

  • Make sure to work in a well-ventilated area due to the nature of the lye.

  • If any lye gets on your skin, pour vinegar on the affected area to stop the chemical reaction and contact a doctor if needed.
