How to Make Metal Railings
Metal handrails are solid and last much longer than other types of handrails. Metal handrails can be put together by using a power screwdriver in just a few minutes. Metal railings are used outdoors or in factories, hospitals and even apartments.
- Select the location you plan to mount your railings. Analyze the wall where you plan to mount your metal handrail. If it is made of drywall you will need to use a magnet or stud finder to locate the nearest studs. If you have concrete, you may use lag bolts to attach the metal handrail. Use wood screws to attach the metal railing if you have a paneled wall or if you are installing it outdoors on the side of a house.
- Take proper measurements. Measure the length of the wall where you want to install the handrail. If the rail will be freestanding, you will need one post and T-fitting about every 4 feet.
- Screw the piping together. Take one of the 90-degree elbows and screw it onto one end of your first section of pipe. Next, screw a T-fitting on the other end. Screw the second piece of pipe into the first T-fitting. Continue this process until the railing reaches your desired length.
- Mix the concrete. Pour the concrete in a wheelbarrow and fill each post hole. Next, brace the rail in the correct position until the concrete sets. An assistant may be needed to ensure accuracy.
