How to Make Microsoft Works Open a Word Document

Someone has just sent you an important Word document to look over, but you're unable to open it because you don't have Microsoft Word on your computer. You do have Microsoft Works, however, and you can open up Word documents with just a few clicks. Fortunately, you won't have to use another computer that has Word on it to open up and make changes to your document.

  1. Open up Microsoft Works from your desktop or from the Start Menu. Follow this procedure if you're unable to find it on your desktop or Quick Menu. Click on "Start" and choose "Search." Type in "Microsoft Works" (without the quotes).

  2. Navigate to "Programs" on the toolbar. Click on the pencil and paper icon in "Blank Word Processor Document."

  3. Click on "File" and choose "Open." Specify .doc under types of files to show all Microsoft Word documents.

  4. Look in the location where you saved your document and choose the .doc file. Open the file and save it as Microsoft Works document.

  5. Edit your document while it is open. Save your document.
