How to Make Money With Your Own Housekeeping Business

Owning your own housekeeping business is, as is with any business, a lot of responsibility. But with that comes the satisfaction of a job well done and keeping the profits for yourself.  Keeping expenses down and customer satisfaction high is key to making money with your own housekeeping business.

  1. Start with gathering your housekeeping supplies. This includes cleaning agents, cloths and scrub pads, buckets, a vacuum cleaner, and any other supplies needed to clean homes. You will need enough of each item for each person in your crew if you're not working alone.

  2. Use supplies you already have on hand to get started.

  3. Assess your inventory. Make a list of the items you still need. Get your needed items for the best prices; invest as little as possible when starting out to keeps costs down and profits high.

  4. Advertise your housekeeping business. Use your local newspapers, ads on craigslist.com, flyers and business cards if you can afford them. Consider every way you can get the word out. This includes talking to family and friends. They can pass the word on for you.

  5. Know the rates of your competition: this part maybe a bit tricky.  Ask others what they are willing to pay, starting with family and friends. Call house cleaning companies in your area and ask for an estimate. Keep in mind professional companies have higher overhead and therefore they must charge more. Keep your rates reasonable.

  6. Meet with prospective clients. You'll need to explain what is included in your regular house cleaning service and for what price.  Each home will be different, so you'll have to adjust your prices accordingly.  If you are willing to provide other services, you can let the customer know that.

  7. Keep your receipts. All of your expenses are tax deductible including gas to and from your clients' homes.
