How to Make Natural Body Products
The body lotions and oils that cost so much at the store can be easily recreated at home. When a favorite brand becomes too expensive, consider replacing it with your own heady aromas. Home crafted body products also make thoughtful and unusual gifts for family and friends.
Items Needed:
- ¾ cups of pure almond oil
- 1 cup pure water
- 2 tablespoons shaved beeswax
- 30 drops essential oil
- Glass bowl
- Wire whisk
- Pan
- Jars
- Gather your supplies. Essential oils can be mixed but be sure and keep the recipe to 30 drops. If you decide to mix aromas, divide the number of drops. For example, two essential oils would require 15 drops from each. Choose scents that are complementary tone another and not jarring. If you are not sure, mix one drop of each oil on the end of a q-tip to experience the aroma.
- Put the almond oil into a glass bowl. Almond oil is extracted from almonds and has no additional preservatives or additives. Add the shaved beeswax.
- Fill a saucepan with tap water and set the glass bowl in the saucepan. Heat over medium heat, stirring until the beeswax has completely melted. Remove from the heat and allow to cool for one or two minutes. Do not allow the mixture to set longer than that or the beeswax will start to harden.
- In another bowl measure out the pure water. Be sure and use water that has been distilled and has no additional additives or preservatives. Slowly add the oil mix to the water, whisking continuously with the wire whisk. After ¾ of the oil has been added, the mixture will begin to thicken. Continue slowly adding the oil until it has all been incorporated and is well blended.
- Add 30 drops of essential oil. More than 30 drops can cause rashes in some people and the scent can become overpowering. It can also cause the lotion to become greasy.
- When the lotion has cooled completely, transfer it into small storage jars. Add a label ad a date, along with the essential oils added. The lotion will last up to six months when stored in a cool dark place or in the refrigerator.
