How to Make Palm Trees for a Cake
If you are tired of serving the same old type of dessert at your parties you should consider serving a cake with a tropical theme. It would be something that is unique and would also make a great conversation piece. You would need to put some palm trees on the cake to make it complete, but they are fairly simple to make.
How to Make Palm Trees for a Cake
- Mix 10 ounces of fondant and 1 teaspoon of gum paste in a small mixing bowl. The gum paste is used to help make the fondant more pliable.
- Add three drops of green food coloring to the fondant mixture. You can add more or less depending on the color you are trying to achieve.
- Sprinkle some flour on a cutting board.
- Place the fondant on the cutting board and use a rolling pin to flatten it out. It should be rolled until it is about 1/8-inches thick.
- Use a small leaf cookie cutter to cut out seven leave shapes.
- Coat the rolling pin with cornstarch.
- Place the leaves onto the rolling pin to give them a natural curve shape.
- Allow several hours for the fondant to completely dry.
- Remove the leaves from the rolling pin after they have dried.
- Place three drops of green food coloring into a cup of white royal icing. Make sure the color of the icing matches the color of the leaves.
- Place a piece of waxed paper on the counter and put a glob of icing in the middle.
- Arrange four of the leaves to form an "X" shake around the glob of green icing. The icing will be used as a glue to hold the leaves together.
- Place another glob of green icing in the center of the leaf formation you just created.
- Gently turn the palm tree over and place a pretzel stick in the center of the bottom of the tree.
- Secure the pretzel with icing and allow it to dry.
