How to Make Replacement Keys for a 1999 Chevrolet Camaro

The Chevy Camaro is a very popular sports car. Chevrolet has been manufacturing Camaros since 1969 and they are still going strong. If you lose or misplace your keys it is not hard to have them replaced. It will require a trip to a Chevy dealership but it won’t be difficult to get the keys.

  • Understand that for security and helping to keep anyone from stealing your car the key has a chip contained within it. Without the proper chip the car will not start. There are only two ways to get one of those keys. One is through a dealership and the other is from a vendor who is authorized to reprogram keys to sell to owners who need them. Both of these sources can make keys that will work with you Camaro’s keyless entry system.

  • Get the vehicle identification number (VIN) from your car. An easy way to do this is just take it off your registration card or insurance card.

  • Take this VIN to either a dealership or an authorized vendor with some identification. The dealership will most likely be more expensive than the vendor so you may want to price shop. You can find the vendors online.

  • Present you identification and the VIN number to the person who is going to make your key. You will have to provide identification that can easily identify you to them such as a government ID or something similar. The whole purpose is to make it harder for thieves to steal the cars to begin with. Then by simply locating the VIN in their system they make you a new key. Be prepared, they usually cost $50 or more.
