How to Make Safety Training Fun

Safety training can be a long process with many sessions and hours put into teaching and learning. One thing safety training does not have to be is boring. There are lots of ways to spice up a safety training session and make learning exciting for everyone.

When it comes to safety training everyone teaches and learns differently. It is best to try multiple approaches to make safety training fun and find out what works best for you. Ways to make safety training fun include:

  • Use of colors. Whether you create a poster board, a slideshow, a movie, or anything that is visual to teach safety, use bright, bold colors. Colors can attract and keep a persons attention, especially if they are dramatic. You can even dress in fun colors while teaching safety techniques.

  • Use of music. Most people enjoy music and will be more willing to learn when music is used. Find up beat songs and play instruments. Have the people in safety training sing the songs with you and give them their own instruments to play. Make sure a song's lyrics promote safety.

  • Use of games. Games can be simple or difficult, and as fun and elaborate as you like. Make up your own personal safety game or look online or in stores for pre-made games. Be sure that everyone learning about safety gets a chance to play and understand the game.

  • Switching things up. Repetitive training can become stale and boring. It is important to keep the training interesting to keep people motivated and encourage them to learn. You don't need to change everything about every session. One or two small changes are fine. Things that can be switched up are the location of the training, activities done in training, and even the order in which people sit during training.

  • Giving Rewards. For those who do particularly well in safety training or for group accomplishments, give out rewards. Rewards can be anything from stickers to candy to certificates and trophies.

  • Having a positive attitude. The enjoyment of safety training can be intensified with a happy, up-beat instructor. Speak in a caring, confident voice, give people encouragement and compliments, and be energetic throughout training sessions. Putting on a smile is important, too. Often times, an instructors’ attitude can encourage students to have the same attitude.
