How to Make Sewing Projects for Free

Sewing as a hobby or for money does not have to be expensive. There are many sewing projects to make that are absolutely free. A little creativity can turn your unused sewing leftovers into useful crafts, gifts or a new business venture. There are many ways to get needed supplies for projects with no cost. Quilting is an example of a sewing project that uses small pieces of fabrics. Sew for free!

  1. Assess your supplies and instruments needed for sewing. You will need a sewing machine unless you plan to sew everything by hand. Scissors, measuring tape, pins and needles are essential supplies. Fabrics, threads, trims and patterns are all helpful items to have.

  2. Let the word out that you will take in sewing related supplies. Many people have leftover fabrics and unused materials that they will be glad to be rid of. You might even get free patterns in this manner.

  3. Visit your local library for craft sewing project ideas. The library is free and they have whole sections devoted to crafts and sewing.

  4. Pick up any discarded sewing items from sewing manufacturers or fabric stores. Once in a while they will give things away. It does not hurt to ask.

  5. Do a swap and exchange with other crafters. Perhaps you have knitting supplies you will not need. Some people use Internet sites to do this sort of thing.

  6. Plan your projects based on the supplies that you have. Be creative. There are many sewing projects that require small amounts of fabric. Many people make a lot of money selling at craft fairs. Some sew gifts for others. A few items to think about are doll clothes, baby clothes, small craft projects, stuffed animals or household decorations.

  7. Let your creative style be your guide as to what you sew. An old shower curtain could turn into an outdoor tablecloth.

  8. Use clothes or other fabric items and learn to quilt. There are thousands of ideas and patterns out there.
