How to Make Simple Paper Flowers
Basic paper flowers are a wonderful craft activity to do with the kids, and can also be great for decorating the home for a special occasion, such as a birthday or a spring holiday. While there are a number of intricate paper flower designs available, it is possible to create lovely flowers using a few supplies and a little time.
Items Needed:
- Miscellaneous jar lids
- Construction paper of different colors
- Colored markers
- Scissors
- Hot glue gun and glue sticks
- Florist wire and tape
- Cut out the circles that will serve as the basis for the paper flowers. Place the lids on pieces of construction paper and use one of the markers to trace around the outside of each lid, then cut them out using the scissors. This will provide a range of centers for flowers of different sizes.
- Sketch out the petals. This can be done by drawing ovals or circles on additional pieces of construction paper. Make sure to use several different colors of paper so the petals can be mixed and matched with the different colors of the centers. Use the scissors to cut out the petals, grouping them by shape and color.
- Place a paper flower center face down on a flat surface. Choose the petals to go with the center. Make sure that one end of each petal overlaps into the circle of the center of the flower and secure each petal with a spot of glue. Depending on the desired design, the petals can be evenly spaced around the center, or allowed to overlap for a fuller look. Allow the glue to dry before proceeding.
- Create stems for each of the flowers. Using pre-cut florist wire, bundle two or three pieces of the wire and wrap with green florist tape. The stems can be short or long, depending on where and how the flowers will be displayed.
- Add some leaves. Using green construction paper, cut out a couple of leaves for each flower. Use the markers to create designs on the leaves, then attach a leaf on each side of the stem for each of the paper flowers using the hot glue.
- Attach a stem to each of the flowers. Place a bead of hot glue on the back of the flower, then press the end of the stem into the glue. For the best results, position the glue near the center of the flower and run the bead down to the end of the petal immediately below that center area. Press the stem into the entire bead and allow it to harden before attempting to place the paper flower into some sort of arrangement.
