How to Make Solid Bubble Bath Bars

Bubble bars, also known as bubble bath bars, are solid bars that provide you a load of fluffy, luxurious bubbles. They are super easy to make and are wonderful gifts for family and friends. You probably already have several of the ingredients in your home.

You Need

  • 1/3 cup cream of tartar

  • 1 cup baking soda

  • 1 cup sodium laurel sulfoacetate SLS (Powdered foaming agent)

  • 1/3 cup (more or less) glycerin liquid

  • Fragrance or essential oil

  1. Make a clean, clutter-free work space.

  2. Wash your hands thoroughly. You don’t want to transfer bacteria from your hands to the soap. You can also wear thin rubber gloves, especially if you are concerned about the liquid colorant staining your hands.

  3. Blend dry ingredients in a bowl. Make sure you have removed all the lumps.

  4. Add the liquid colorant. Aim for a pale or pastel shade. Too much colorant can stain some bathtubs. Try to match the scent you are adding. Tint the soap light purple if you are making lavender scented soap.

  5. Add about 25 drops of fragrance oil to start. Mix the ingredients well with your hands to incorporate the scent and color throughout. Sniff the mixture and add more fragrance if you feel it is not scented enough.

  6. Add liquid glycerin. Pour in slowly, small amounts at a time. Mix thoroughly until the mixture holds together in your hand, similar to dough.

  7. Transfer to a loaf pan. Press the mix firmly into the pan. This helps hold it together as it begins drying. Let it sit for one hour.

  8. Carefully remove the dough from the loaf pan. If it is dry and crumbly, return to the bowl and add more glycerin.  Repeat step seven.

  9. When the bar is firm, cut it into small cubes or slices. A sharp knife works best.

  10. Place the pieces on a wax paper-lined cookie sheet and let them set out for at least 24 hours to cure and harden.

  11. Wrap the bars in cellophane when hardened. It helps protect from humidity.

  12. Store the bars in a cool dry place and use within 3 or 4 months.
