How to Make Storage Cabinets
Home or apartment owners are always trying to find ways to store things that they don't need access to everyday. Some have overlooked the idea of making their own storage unit because it seems too difficult; here are a few instructions that may change their mind. Below are some directions for making your own storage cabinets.
What you will need:
- 1/2" MDF (medium density fiberboard)
- Wood glue
- Luan plywood
- Brad nailer
- Hammer
- Drawer pulls
- Measuring tape
- Small wire brads
- Angles router bit
- Nails
- Drill
- Primer
- Paint
- Cut the sides, top and bottoms of the medium density fiber boards to the length you desire
- Glue and nail the pieces together.
- Measure the inside of the cabinets. Cut the MDF to the appropriate size and slide them into the cabinets to make your shelf. Be sure to leave enough space for your drawer.
- Secure your shelves with either nails and/or glue.
- Cut and attach luan plywood to the back of the cabinet using small wire brads and a hammer for your backing.
- Take your MDF and measure for drawers.
- Join the MDF side and back pieces together using glue and a brad nailer to make your drawers.
- The front enclosure of the drawer is larger than the opening so cut 1/8 inch from the edge of your cabinet.
- Using an angled router bit, route the edges or the front piece and attach it to the drawer.
- Measure and apply a luan plywood piece to the bottom of the drawer.
- Drill a hole into the front piece for the drawer handle.
- Prime and paint the cabinets and drawer as desired.
- Once the drawer has dried, attach the handle.
- Drill a hole into the front piece of the drawer for the drawer handle.
