How to Make Storage Units for Sloped Attic Ceilings
An organized attic can be one of the best places to store your excess belongings. However, a poorly organized attic can be a nightmare for homeowners. Luckily, it is a simple project to create storage units for almost any attic. For homeowners with sloped roof attics, the process of building your own storage units may be quicker and easier than attempting to purchase storage units that will fit your sloped attic.
- Determine the number of storage units you would like to install. Once you know the number of units you would like, all you have to do is determine the measurements of each unit. Simply divide the space available by the number of desired units. This will tell you how large each unit can be.
- For each storage unit to be built, purchase three pieces of plywood. One piece will be the floor of the storage unit, and the other two will be the walls. Use a measuring tape to determine the maximum height that each unit can be. Then use a pencil to mark on the plywood where you need to cut.
- When cutting be mindful of the angle of the ceiling. To account for this challenge, measure the depth that you would like the storage unit to be. Then, find where the sloped wall meets the ceiling, and determine the angle of intersection. You will want to cut the wood with the same angle. This will ensure that the storage unit sits flush against the wall.
- Use builder's cement to secure the walls of the storage unit to the piece of wood that will serve as the floor. Once the glue has dried, the storage unit is ready. Push the empty storage unit against the wall until it is in contact with the sloped ceiling. If you cut the wood at the angle of intersection between the wall and the ceiling, then the storage unit should sit snuggly against the wall.
