How to Make Television Cabinets for a Bedroom From an Old Dresser
A television set requires a platform of some type to place the set at the proper height for convenient viewing. This is typically a cabinet built specifically for this purpose, but you can make a television cabinet from other types of furniture, such as an old dresser. The most important part of this procedure is ensuring the modifications will support the television set.
Things You'll Need:
- Tape measure
- Saw
- 1-by-1-inch boards
- Drill and bit set
- Wood screws
- Measure the width and height of your television set with a tape measure. Measure the interior width and depth of the dresser to ensure the television will fit within it. The dresser must also hold the television set at an adequate height.
- Remove the drawers from the dresser. Remove the mounting hardware for the drawers from the inside of the cabinet. This hardware may consist of brackets, hinges and slides. You must also remove any interior wooden supports for the drawers. This step should result in a completely open cabinet with nothing inside.
- Cut a section of plywood that fits the interior of the cabinet. Cut two lengths of 1-by-1 wood equal to the width of the dresser. Cut two lengths of 1-by-1 wood that are two inches shorter than the depth of the dresser.
- Use the four lengths of wood to construct a frame around the inside of the dresser. Use wood screws to fasten these lengths of wood to the dresser. Ensure that this frame will place the television set at the desired height.
- Slide the plywood sheet into position over the support frame you made. Place the television set on top of this sheet.
