How to Make Unique Decorative Storage Boxes

Making your very own storage boxes is easier than you think. If you've got a lot of things which don't have their own place, and instead cluttering the house, consider making some decorative storage boxes. They will not only tame the clutter, but enhance the room.

Supplies

  • Cardboard boxes

  • Decorative paper

  • Decoupage glue

  • Self adhesive labels

  • Pen

  • Embellishments

  • Fine grit sandpaper

  • Steel wool

  • Paintbrush

  • Paint tray

  1. Determine what size box you want to use for your items.

  2. Try and find a box with a lid. Printer paper boxes are good for this project.

  3. Clean the box thoroughly.

  4. Determine where you plan to display your new creation. Select a theme which will match your decor. For example, if you choose, you can make a photo box with photos of your family.

  5. Select decorative art paper. Purchase enough of the same dye lot to complete the number of boxes you wish to cover for uniformity.

  6. Make a mixture of half water and half decoupage in a paint tray. Use your paint brush to coat the box with light coating of the mixture.

  7. Apply the decorative paper to the box.

  8. Try using a layering effect to create texture.

  9. Set the box aside and allow it to dry overnight.

  10. Add any photos or embellishments by using additional decoupage and applying to the decorative paper.

  11. Carefully wipe each item with a damp rag to smooth out any bubbles or wrinkles which sometimes develop during the application process.

  12. Repeat step nine.

  13. Apply an additional thin layer of decoupage over the entire box to seal items attached.

  14. Repeat step nine.

  15. Use your sandpaper or steel wool to sand the box down. This will give the box a matte finish.

  16. Store your items and display your box in its intended location.
