How to Make Vegetarian Hamburgers

Today, many people are altering their diets to include foods that are more healthful than the traditional fare to which they have become accustomed. Even the iconic hamburger has been turned into a health food. Dozens of recipes have been created for the meatless version of one of America's favorite food items.

One of the drawbacks in using vegetables to form a hamburger is their tendency to fall apart. There are several varieties of binders that mash well to help the veggies stay together. Black beans are one of them, and a favorite among veggie hamburger lovers.

Things you will need:

  • 2 15-ounce cans of black beans

  • 1 medium onion

  • 1 green pepper

  • 1 egg

  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour

  • 1/4 cup cornmeal

  • 1/2 cup salsa

  • 1 teaspoon garlic salt

  • Olive oil

  • 6 hamburger buns

  1. Rinse and thoroughly drain the black beans. Place them in a large bowl and mash them into a relatively smooth consistency.

  2. Dice the onion and pepper by hand, as fine as possible. Avoid using a blender, as you will want the burger to retain a bit of texture.

  3. Cook the onion and pepper in a skillet lightly covered with olive oil to soften them.

  4. Add the onion, pepper and balance of the ingredients into the bowl with the mashed black beans. Mix them thoroughly together.

  5. Roll the mixture into six round balls and place them on a plate. Set the plate in the refrigerator for two hours for blending and to better enable their formation into patties.

  6. Flatten each ball into a patty. Cook them in a pan lightly coated with olive oil until each side is brown. Serve on hamburger buns.
