How to Make Your Martial Arts Training More Effective

Setting some short and long-term goals can help a martial artist to become more effective. By having a list of goals, the martial artist can constantly identify areas that need improvement. Working out alone at home or training with a partner can also help a martial artist to become more effective.

  • Make an appointment to talk with your instructor to discuss how you can become a better martial artist. Set some goals with your instructor and write them down. Keep your goal sheet on your refrigerator at home so you will see it every day.

  • Increase the number of martial arts classes that you take each week. Adding more classes will give you more time to learn from your instructor. You should also reach your belt requirements at a much faster rate by taking more classes.

  • Practice on your own to improve your martial arts skills. After you return home from a martial arts class, perform the moves again to help you remember them. Try to train at home during your off days as well, if you have the time. If you take martial arts classes with a friend, train together on off days so you can both become more effective martial artists.

  • Start to workout with weights to add more power to your martial arts strikes. Increase your upper body strength to improve your punching power. Train your legs to add more power to your kicks. You can also start a cardiovascular training program to work on improving your fitness. Do a combination of distance and sprint training to get into the best shape possible.

  • Buy martial arts DVDs that have advanced techniques. Search online to find DVDs to buy, or ask your instructor for some recommendations. Study the DVDs and then practice what you learn. Work with your instructor to get help performing a move with the proper technique.
