How to Make Your Own Fabric Patio Covers
Patio covers are a great way to use your patio in all types of weather. But depending on the climate, they can be worn and frayed and require replacement. So if you have the basic frame for a patio cover, you can replace the cover yourself.
Supplies
- Measuring tape
- Heavy duty canvas
- Sewing machine
- Heavy denim needle
- Heavy nylon thread
- Fabric Chalk
- Velcro
- Pins
- Scissors
- Remove any old canvas from the patio's cover frame. Spread it out on a flat surface and measure it. This helps determine how much fabric is needed and to buy.
- Purchase heavy, good quality canvas. This will ensure years of functionality.
- Spread the new fabric out onto the ground. Pin the old fabric over the new to create the correct size piece. Mark all the seams and turned material edges with fabric chalk.
- Remove all the pins and lift the old patio cover off the new fabric. Use your scissors to cut the new pattern out.
- Set up your sewing machine with a heavy-duty needle. Sew the raw edges of the canvas to form the sleeves for installation of the hardware on the frame. Use the chalk lines as a guide.
- Insert the patio cover onto the frame, and check the placement that it hangs correctly. If the new material required an additional slit in the fabric at the corner in order to place it onto the frame, sew a piece of Velcro on the corner flaps to keep it closed.
