How to Make a Cosmetic Bag From Satin Fabric

Satin cosmetic bags are easy to make yourself. You do not need any previous sewing experience to assemble one of these satin bags, and there are just a few supplies. Deciding to create your own gives you a wider variety of color, pattern and bag size.

Supplies:

  • sewing needle

  • thread

  • Velcro

  • hot glue gun

  • glue sticks

  • one square foot of cotton batting

  • one square foot of muslin fabric

  • one square foot of satin fabric

  1. Lay a letter-sized piece of paper on a flat surface in front of you in a landscape page layout. Fold the right side of the paper over to the left. Cut the paper along the fold line and use the remaining square as a template for your fabric.

  2. Using the paper template, trace the size on two pieces of muslin fabric, two pieces of satin fabric and two pieces of cotton batting. Once you have finished tracing, cut out all of the pieces.

  3. Lay the satin rectangles on the flat surface and cover it with the cotton batting piece and then the muslin fabric. Make sure that all of the edges are together and pin the pieces together.

  4. Using a straight stitch, sew one long side and two short sides of the rectangles together. Fold the remaining satin side about a half inch over the muslin side. Zigzag a stitch to fold it in place.

  5. Repeat the third and fourth step with the other fabric pieces you have.

  6. Set one fabric rectangle down so the satin is on top. Cover the rectangle with the other rectangle; make sure that the satin fabric is facing inside.

  7. Sew a long side and two short sides together by whip-stitching by hand or using a zigzag stitch with a sewing machine. Pull the fabric right side out, so the satin is on the outside of the bag.

  8. Glue a three-inch strip of Velcro to the inside of the purse so you can close it. Apply the Velcro strip half-an-inch into the purse. Apply a Velcro strip in the same spot on the opposite side.
