How to Make a Healthy Protein Drink

Healthy protein drinks are a fast and delicious way to make a nutritious meal in short order. There are so many choices of what to add. Prepared mixes, powdered and frozen, are available to do part of the work for you. You can stick things in there that you would not normally eat, like fresh spinach.

  1. Get out your blender.

  2. Choose a protein source for your drink. If you like, you can start with a protein shake mix or a protein powder, like Jarrow Formula's Whey Protein in Unflavored or Vanilla. Some people add a raw egg or two, but the safety of that is debatable. If you prefer a vegetable protein source, try Lifetime Life's Basics Plant Protein Powder with Greens.

  3. Follow the instructions for adding protein powder.

  4. Add in greens and plenty of them. You will be surprised that you can add a cup of baby spinach leaves, and they won't change the taste of your drink.

  5. Choose your liquids. Try orange or pomegranate juice, V-8 or other 100 percent fruit juice. You can also go with low fat milk or almond or soy milk. Soy milk has seven grams of protein per cup while the other two have only one gram.

  6. Add about 1.5 cups of your preferred liquid. It does not need to be exact.

  7. Throw in a few ice cubes to make it cold, creamy and like a milkshake.

  8. Turn on your blender and let it blend until it is smooth and creamy. If the mixture is not blending efficiently, pour in small amounts of liquid until it does.

There are plenty of powdered shake mixes out there to try if you find making your own too time consuming, you don't like the taste or you would like something simpler. Consider Nature's Plus Spiru-Tein.
