How to Make a Kids Arts & Crafts Windmill

One of the most popular childhood art projects is the windmill. Not only are these fun to make, but they are fun to play with. Children like to make these, because they love how they can take an object, and turn it into something that is more complex, fun and a little magical.

What You'll Need:

  • A Long Stick

  • Thin Poster Board or Construction Paper

  • Non-Toxic School Glue

  • Scissors

  • Pencils

  1. Create a pattern to cut out the windmill. Typically, the windmill will be shaped like a triangle on the ends. Make sure that the pattern allows for the ends to be cut out, without cutting in the middle. The middle needs to stay in tact, because the ends of the windmill will be glue together in the middle. If you need to find a good pattern, go online to an arts and crafts website. Print out the pattern, make copies of it, and give it to the children to trace on their sheets of paper.

  2. Cut the pattern with the scissors. Again, make sure to cut away the ends of the windmill, and not the middle. When the children are finished, they should be left with a square with frayed ends that are shaped like a triangle, or in the shape of the windmill pattern.

  3. Fold the frayed ends together, so that the ends are attached in the middle. When they are all attached together, the project should look somewhat like a four-sided star.

  4. Attach the paper to the long sticks. The plastic sticks can be found at a local arts and crafts store, or they can be purchased online through an arts and crafts website. Wooden sticks can be found out in nature. Be sure to use long and thin tree branches that won't hurt the child. The paper should be attached by making a hole in the middle of the paper and by attaching it to a spinner that will be glued to the stick as well.

  5. Allow the glue to dry for a few hours. When the glue is finished drying, then the child can take their windmill outside to catch the wind and watch it spin.
