How to Make a Living With Custom Cabinets
Cabinets can beautify a home and increase its value, especially if they have been custom made to fit. Kitchen, basement, laundry and garage cabinets can be put in almost any home. If you have the talent and the skill to make cabinets, you are in high demand. Get out your measuring tape and saw because you can start a career in cabinet carpentry.
- Evaluate your ability to make custom cabinets. Will you need assistance making or installing the cabinets? Should you take a carpentry class at a community college? Be honest with yourself. If you lack skill in any area, find a way to improve.
- Determine where you will make the cabinets. Do you have a garage or basement with extra space? Will you need to rent space where you can create the cabinets? Without adequate space, your work may suffer, or you could run out of room.
- Create a name for your custom cabinet business. It should be simple and creative. Attract customers with your business name. You can also create a logo or slogan that accents it.
- Apply for the required business licenses in your city, county and state. You need these items to sell cabinets to the public.
- Determine how much money you need to charge for your cabinets. Set prices so customers know an approximate cost. Since these are custom cabinets, there will be some variance in price; however, have a rough idea what two or three cabinets will cost. Look into other businesses like yours and stay competitive.
- Advertise with fliers, a Facebook page, business cards or any other means to get your work and name out. You need customers to be successful.
- Take orders and begin creating custom cabinets for your clients. Remember that customers need to be satisfied in order to recommend you to other potential clients.
